Snow-dusted mountains above the Spiti valley

Spiti Valley itinerary: a one-week trip plan

The best time for a Spiti Valley trip is June to September. Both roads in are open, days are mild, and the high lakes and villages are reachable. Spiti’s main town, Kaza, is at about 3,650 m, so plan rest days: most of the sights are above 4,000 m.

Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert in Lahaul and Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh. Here is how we suggest planning it, from the family that runs Hotel Spiti Villa near Key Monastery.

Which route should I take to Spiti?

There are two ways in:

  • Shimla–Kinnaur–Tabo–Kaza (NH 505), about 420 km. Open all year, apart from short closures for landslides or heavy snow. It climbs gradually, which is the best way to acclimatise.
  • Manali–Kunzum Pass–Kaza, about 200 km. Shorter, but open only from about June to mid-October, once snow is cleared, and it climbs to around 4,550 m quickly.

Many travellers do a circuit: in through Kinnaur, out over Kunzum to Manali. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the Kinnaur border stretch, checked at Sumdo; confirm current rules before you travel.

A sample one-week Spiti circuit

  1. Shimla to the Kinnaur valley. Break the drive and start gaining height slowly.
  2. Kinnaur to Tabo. See Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 CE at about 3,050 m and noted as the oldest continuously operating Buddhist enclave in India and the Himalayas.
  3. Tabo to Kaza via Dhankar. Stop at Dhankar Monastery, at about 3,894 m on a cliff above the meeting of the Spiti and Pin rivers.
  4. Rest day in Kaza. Walk gently, drink plenty of water, and let your body adjust to 3,650 m.
  5. Key Monastery and Kibber. Key, 12 km north of Kaza at 4,166 m, is Spiti’s largest monastery. Kibber, about 19 km from Kaza at around 4,270 m, borders the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, known for snow leopards.
  6. Kaza to Chandra Taal. The crescent-shaped Ramsar lake at about 4,250–4,300 m is reached by a road off NH-505, 8 km from Kunzum Pass, from late May to early October.
  7. Over Kunzum Pass to Manali.

What is the weather like in Spiti?

July is the warmest month, averaging about 15 °C, and nights can still drop below freezing. Spring and autumn are cold, and January can fall to −30 °C. Pack warm layers, sunscreen and sunglasses in every season: the sun is fierce at this height.

Where to stay near Key Monastery
