The snow-capped Dhauladhar range above the town of Dharamshala

Best time to visit Dharamshala

The best time to visit Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj is March to June and late September to November. Spring and early summer bring warm, dry days and clear mountain views; autumn, after the monsoon, has the sharpest skies of the year. Mid-June to mid-September is very wet, and December to February is cold, with snow in upper Dharamshala.

Dharamshala sits at about 1,457 m in Kangra district, with McLeod Ganj higher up at around 2,000 m, so the two can feel like different seasons on the same day. Here is what each part of the year is like.

What is Dharamshala like from March to June?

Spring arrives in March and summer starts in early April, peaking in May, when the lower town can touch 36 °C. Days are bright and dry, and the Dhauladhar often still carries snow on top. This is the busiest season for families and for the Triund trek, so book rooms early for May and June.

What happens in the monsoon (mid-June to mid-September)?

Dharamshala is one of the wettest places in India: about 3,000 mm of rain a year, with July and August each bringing more than 850 mm. The hills turn deep green and the waterfalls at Bhagsu are at their fullest, but roads can be slow, and treks are slippery after heavy rain. It is a good time for Norbulingka, the monasteries and the cafés of McLeod Ganj, with fewer crowds.

Why go in late September to November?

Once the rains clear, the air is washed clean. Late September, October and November give the best views of the snow line and comfortable days for walking. Evenings turn cold by November, so pack a warm layer.

Is winter (December to February) worth it?

Yes, if you like the cold. Snow and sleet are common in upper Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, while the lower town mostly sees hail. Mornings are clear and quiet, and the Dhauladhar looks its most dramatic. Check road conditions before driving up after a snowfall.

Where to stay

Our three Dharamshala hotels are in Sidhpur, near the Norbulingka Institute, about 12 km from McLeod Ganj and 10–15 km from Kangra (Gaggal) Airport:

Quick answers

What is the best month to visit Dharamshala?

October is often the clearest month, with crisp air and sharp Dhauladhar views after the monsoon. March to June is the other good window, with warm, dry days; May is the warmest month.

Does it snow in Dharamshala?

Snow and sleet are common in upper Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj from December to late February, and the Dhauladhar peaks are white all winter. Lower Dharamshala rarely gets snow, mostly hail.

Is it safe to visit Dharamshala in the monsoon?

Yes, but expect heavy rain from mid-June to mid-September: Dharamshala gets about 3,000 mm a year, most of it in July and August. Plan indoor sights, allow extra travel time and avoid treks after heavy rain.

How many days are enough for Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj?

We suggest three days: one for McLeod Ganj and the Dalai Lama temple, one for Norbulingka and lower Dharamshala, and one for the Triund trek or paragliding at Indrunag.
